Smell & Taste

In this entry I will publish a set of activities that will be related with FOOD. While planning all the tasks I have tried to take into account as much skills as possible. In this way, students will develop their productive skills (speaking and writing) as well as their receptive skills (reading and listening).

However, it is necessary to bear in mind that young learners are not mature enough to write and read. For this reason, they just can trace words. Furthermore, even if they start reading in their mother tongue, pupils can’t in the foreign language. Thus, the teacher will read for them.

1- Do you like broccoli ice-cream?

Through this song students will have the opportunity to learn/practice new vocabulary and chunks of language which are directly related with the topic of this entry. Kids will learn:
  • Do you like....?
  • Yes I like.../No i don't like...
  • I like...
  • Yummy!
  • Yuck!

The teacher can use this tool as a warm-up activity to start the unit.

2- The blindfold game

The teacher will buy a huge variety of food and he/she will cut it into small pieces or cubes. A blindfolded student will pick up one piece of food and he/she will have to make a guess. Moreover, the kid will have to point out if he/she likes it or not (he/she will have to use different chunks of language).

3- The bingo game

The purpose of this activity is to review the FOOD vocabulary.
The teacher will print out different bingo cards for each child. In this way, students will place pennies or something similar on the called image if it’s on their card. When a pupil marks all the images he/she must call out BINGO! The teacher will be the caller. Thus, he/she will be in charge of calling out the different words. Once a student has won the game, he/she will swap places with the teacher. The student becomes the caller.
